Wednesday Hodgepodge

I´m back for some Hodgepodge fun.

1. How do you typically react in a sudden, extreme, pressure-filled crisis? Would we want you nearby in an emergency?
I think I do my best work when I´m under pressure. I may look like a chicken with her head cut off, but I take control and get it done. Same with emergencies.

2. Caramel apple-caramel sundae-caramel corn-caramel macchiato...of the four, which carmel treat would you choose?

Caramel sundae!! Hmmmmmmmmmm

3. Is there such a thing as destiny? Explain.
I´m not sure. I always thought it´s destiny to find the one partner for life, but after seeing my daughter lose a few "destined" boyfriends I think it´s up to you to make your destiny.
If life gives you lemons, it´s up to you to make lemonade of it.

4. What's your favorite piece of furniture? I'm referring to something currently in your possession as opposed to something on your wish list.
(I couldn´t find a picture of the whole couch, but this is half...)
My couch. In the evenings it´s my favorite place to lay on and watch tv or blog. It´s also where I go when hubs is snoring too badly and I can´t sleep.

5. Wednesday night marks the start of the 2011 Baseball World Series. Did you know? Do you care? Will you be watching? Ever been to a professional baseball game? If you're not an American do you find the title 'World Series' annoying or amusing?
I´ve never been to a professional game and don´t really care. Baseball is not a sport I grew up with (we left Canada when I was 11) and later in life I´ve never been interested in watching sports. We don´t "get" the world Series on our satelite channels, so it doesn´t annoy me. :)

6. A sound that takes me back to my childhood is____________.
The sewing machine. My mother used to make all our "Sunday" clothes for us and did a lot of sewing. I never got into it, but if I hear a sewing machine it reminds me of my mom, when she was still well.

7. On average, once you've linked your hodgepodge post to mine how many other participant blogs do you visit? Do you ever come back to the Hodgepodge later in the day or even the day after to read posts?
I usually visit about 4 or 5 other hp posts and try to comment on those. But they are on my Blog reader list anyway´s so I don´t normally go back to your blog to choose from there. I just don´t have the time.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
My quest to lose weight is going well, but very slowly. I never thought that a fifty year old body would be so stubborn to let go of it´s fat. It seems like every ounce is a mayor accomplishment. But like I wrote in my other blog, I think God is making it extra hard for me, so that I learn to eat healthy along the way. It also teaches me to say NO to things I don´t need.
One incentive I have is that we want to go on vacation in Feb. of next year. We are planning a trip to a city near Rio in Brazil. It´s something we´ve never done before and I´m super excited about that!! And I really really need to lose weight before I show myself in a bathing suit!! I´ll post more details once everything is booked, but I already don´t know how I´ll stand to wait 3 more months!!

You will get there, I know!
Our answers are quite similar. I'll be posting them at midnight.

I'm with you on #1 - I'm totally there in a crisis, can even take charge if no on else can, but watch me fall apart later, lol, when the stress is over and all actually went better than expected! Love your cosy couch! Wow on your vacation plans! Good for you and you will make it! I love your dedication! 18 years ago, at age 50, I was 40+ lbs. less than now. Can't believe it! Trying to get that down NOW is just sooooo hard! So, my advice, and you don't have to pay for it, once you are down to where you want to be, keep it down! My clothes are fitting looser lately, but it's not easy!

The sound of a sewing machine reminds of my mother too. When I was little she sewed for me all the time. I remember in about the third grade begging for something bought from a store....isn't that awful!
Your trip sounds very exciting and that will be a great incentive to continue with your change in diet and your exercise.

You'll get there, Betty! Just one day at a time. It's great that you have such a great vacation to look forward to!

I wish I had a couch like that. We have a small love seat which is okay to lay on but not the greatest. I'm the same in an emergency also. It get done, sometimes not pretty but done none the less.
Take care Betty and thank you for stopping by.
P.S. I like fresh apples, I'm not to much into cakes and pies. So it's easy to fix these. Not safe with the chocolate though.

My Mom sewed lots of our clothes on a treadle sewing machine.
I can't seem to loose...even one pound. I get so annoyed....I know I need to change a few things. I have done this once and I can WIN over this silly POUND thing. Hmmm...that was a nice little rant!!!

I had a chance to test my emergency skills a couple of weeks ago when all the neighborhood boys were playing football in the backyard and my son ran in and told me a kid was bleeding. It was actually two kids who knocked heads, and I KNEW head wounds bleed like crazy. I was happy that I can still handle situations like that calmly. I'm like Karin, though, in that if it's pretty bad I do tend to fall apart when it's all over.

It is really hard to lose weight after 50. It wasn't until the stress of D's death that I broke below where I kept getting stuck at. The weight is starting to want to edge back so I'm trying to be vigilant. That trip you are planning sounds like good incentive.

I also grew up hearing my mother's sewing machine and my girls grew up with me sewing all the time. It is a good memory.

I hope this shows up this time...

My mother made nearly all of my clothes when I was little! But then, as I neared my teen years, homemade clothing was not cool. LOL She taught me but I do not have the patience for it! Birdie does though!

I so very much love your attitude towards this weight loss journey! You keep it grounded and positive! We all need to do that!

Hi Betty,

Brazil !?!?! You lucky girl! I've never been wither and would love to see Rio someday.

Keep up the good work on the weight loss. The older we get the harder it seems to get :-(

Your sewing machine comment made me smile. I sew a lot and did as a kids too. You reminded me of my grandmother's sewing machine-- She made a lot of our clothes.

Happy Wednesday! xo jj

Caramel sundae!! Nothing like that to take our minds off weight loss... but like you, with all the hard work that comes with taking off middle age fat, I have to think long and hard about such treats. Are they worth it? Sometimes...

Best wishes!

I'm with you on #2. YUM!

It seems like the older I get, the easier it is to gain weight, and the harder it is to lose it :(

Hang in there with the diet. I am trying to lose too. I've got 10 years on you and you're right, it gets harder and harder the older we become. Best of luck!

I am so with you on how difficult it is to drop pounds once you're over 45. It's good to have a goal and something to look forward to as an incentive. Hope you are feeling the way you'd like by the time your trip rolls around!

I wonder how many of us head to the couch when hubby's snores get too loud? I'm with you on that one.
Love touching base with you on Wednesdays. Take care!

I'm sorry -- I am still thinking of caramel. What were the other questions?

I never thought about it but the sound of a sewing machine is one from my childhood as well. My mom also made a lot of our clothes and other stuff. I love hearing her use it even now.

Thanks for sharing this memory as it brought back so many of my own. Hugs!

Hang in there darlin'...I'm confident you'll reach you weight goal!

I'm just thrilled that you get to take this fabulous trip sweetie!

God bless ya and have yourself an extraordinary day sweetie!!! :o)

Hi! Well, since I don't like caramel at all (except in Snickers candy bars!), #2 is not for me! I love your living room and how inviting it is! I can see that your couch is a great place to lounge on! When I was a child, I would go to baseball, football, and basketball games with my dad--not because I like them but because I wanted to be with my dad! Now I don't really pay attention to what's going on in the "Sports World" -- except for the soccer news my husband tells me about. My mom was a "sewer" too, so I feel just like you do about that. However, she hasn't sewn anything in YEARS. She's visiting now, so maybe I'll get her to mend something for me! :) Have a nice weekend!

I am the type that stays completely calm in a crisis and then as soon as everything calms down I disintegrate!

My mother worked as a seamstress for a while and she sewed all our clothes too.

Sorry to say... in an emergency, I will send them to you. I'd be too rattled, I'm afraid.

As far as a crisis situation, I think I'd get things done, but also run a round rather than stay calm. I agree with you about baseball. I do not watch it. As far as weight loss, I like what author Nigel Marsh said in his book, "Fat, Forty and Fired," there's no point in buying all these books and gimmicky stuff. "It's simple, eat less and exercise more. That's it." Have fun in Rio.

You made me smile, Betty-- "The institution of marriage"... I LOVE that and think it says so much about you and your husband-- Not everyone's mind goes in that direction when the question is asked.
