Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. What song reminds you of a specific time in your life and what is it about that song that makes you remember?

Whoever is 50 or older remembers the song Dream Weaver, right? It was one of my favorites from when I was a teenager. It made me dream of my future and was very romantic to me. Of course being totally in love helped. LOL. :) Every time I hear it now it reminds me of that time in my life.

2. What's something you've given up on?
Now don´t take this the wrong way, but I´ve given up on having a close relationship with my parents. It´s nothing against them and I´m not complaining. I think it´s a natural progression of things, that once your parents have gotten older you cannot have the same close relationship you had, say when you were younger. I think it´s a time of letting them go and being prepared to manage life without them, when they are gone.

3. What's something you'll never give up on?
I´ll never give up hope that some day we´ll have DQ ice cream cones here in Paraguay. LOL!

4. If you had to cook something from scratch in the next hour what would it be?
I´m actually preparing to bake some cupcakes from scratch this afternoon. I have some Cranberry´s and want to use those. I found this recipe and will let you know it it turns out ok.

5. Have you started Christmas shopping? Decorating? Listening to Christmas music?
Christmas music, yes. But no shopping done yet. I will be making some center pieces with my SIL for the first advent, but other than that no decorating either. I usually decorate on  Dec. 8th. That´s a holiday here and gives me a whole day to pull out the decorations.

6. What do you know about your parent's wedding?
I know it was very cold. The night before the temp´s went down to 0°C. Very rare for here. The wedding itself was held in a big tent at my grandparents home (mother´s side). Back then they celebrated for two days straight. Friday night they had a "Polter abend", with skits and presents and food for everyone. Saturday everyone helped prepare for the wedding and in the afternoon the actual ceremony was held.

7. I can't believe I ___________________.
........can´t get used to needing glasses. Why can other people put them on and wear them the whole day and not be bothered by them? I just hate them!!
I know, my friend B. would say "Wah wah wah, get over it and be glad you have them". LOL!
But I am seriously considering lasik eye surgery.

(Laptop pic)

8. Insert your own random thought here.
 See Nr. 7.
Should I or shouldn´t I? What´s your opinion? Do you know anyone who´s had it done?
The eye doctor told me that the problem is that they can´t make my eyes like they were when I was young. I will either be able to see far without glasses (so basically like now) or I will be able to read (see close by) without glasses but then I would need glasses to see far away. It´s  a catch 22 situation and that´s the only thing holding me back right now.
My sister had it done, but for her it was because she was so near sighted and she  was already used to wearing glasses. Now she doesn´t need glasses to see far away, but for reading she still does (like me).

So let´s hear it. What do you think about lasik?

I have started buying a few presents already. Christmas is closer than I'd like to think and I am planning to spend it at the coast with Mither this year ... weather permitting re traveling.

I wouldn't get laser surgery done myself. I guess I'm too worried about my eyes even though they have preformed many, many surgeries with success there is always that chance!

I think that I have told you before that I had monovision surgery about 10 or 11 yrs ago.....one eye for reading and one eye for distance. It worked great and I loved it, but they told me that it wouldn't last forever because asI got older (sigh) my eyes would continue to change and that is what happened. I am now back to needing reading glasses for some things.
If you ever get to Colorado we can go to Dairy Queen....there is one in walking distance from my house.

I had to get glasses last year. I am finally used to them : ) I think after a certain age the surgery is not as beneficial but I don't have the statistics on that. I think you look good in glasses.

I saw Gary Wright about ten years ago...he was one of about five groups/singers who performed. Ambrosia was also there and I loved them, England Dan and John Ford Coley...can't remember who else but Dream Weaver still sounded good: )

I love those glasses on you - you picked a good style! I needed no glasses until I was about 60 and then I needed trifocals - up close for reading, mid-way for playing the piano, and just plain glass for seeing distance. I don't need them to drive and on long trips actually take them off. Took me a while, but I got used to them. Hated glasses at first - can't stand smudges, lol! Give yourself a chance! I have had friends who've had successful surgery, but as they age they will still need glasses. Sorry, no help here!!

Oh, yes, and I do hope you'll have DQ for their ice-cream - the rest of their food I don't need!!

I like you in glasses Betty! I have heard good things about LASIK surgery; I'm such a chicken about any type of surgery/healthcare matters otherwise I might even consider it myself.

Loved the wedding picture of your parents and you sharing what you knew of it. It does sound like a cold day to get married on!

I know what you mean about a change in relationships as parents age. I saw that in my and my mom's relationship before she passed and I'm seeing it in hubby's relationship with his parents. He can't really come to them for advice because they are beyond that mode of thinking, life is such a struggle for them with different health issues that he's almost taken on the role of the parent in doing things for them, etc. So I get what you are saying!

I saw Gary Wright in concert years ago; love Dreamweaver!

I do hope you get a DQ some day! Its one of my favorite places to go for ice cream!

have a good Wednesday!

I've heard good things about lasik too. My neighbor had it done and he loves it. I am far too chicken to do it. My son had that other procedure done. I forget what it's called. I think he gets dry eyes a lot, but perhaps it's improved by now.

By the way, just looking at the photo of the dip cone makes me salivate.

I wish things would change with my mother. She's STILL trying to tell us all what to do, when to do it, and HOW! Drives me NUTS! LOL

The eye surgery- I say no but only because I'm terrified of such things! Those I know who have done it have been quite satisfied though!

I had lasik about five years ago. Can see great for distance now. But about three years ago I needed to get reading glasses. So now I'm wearing those all the time at work. Really wish that didn't happen.

Okay, speaking as someone who has nearly lost their vision, I will tell you what I have come to understand. Don't let vanity put your vision at risk. Take good care of your eyes, even if it means wearing glasses. I cannot have any surgery to correct my vision now. I MUST WEAR glasses. But, I have accepted it, and actually found a pair I liked.

Oh, my gosh, I haven't heard Dreamweaver in forever!!

No, DQ, yikes!!

What a lovely picture of your parents wedding day!

Goodness, your eyes? I guess you should do what is best for you and what your doctor thinks is best! Not a great answer, huh?

Oh, and I haven't even thought about Christmas, I am still focusing on Thanksgiving, I am in denial that Christmas is coming lol

I love cherry dipped cones!!!
I have glasses and can't get use to them...my friends are always annoyed that I don't wear them...thus ask them to tell me what is on the menu. I guess I am kind of afraid of lasik. Big baby I guess (o:
That is kind of neat to have a 2 day wedding celebration...that was a great picture of them.

Betty, your face is looking slim in that laptop pic. :)

I think I understand about relationships with parents. If the closeness wasn't there for many years, it's not going to change with old age. We all get set in our ways.
But I'm "only" 45 and I dearly remember "Dream Weaver!" The first laser show I ever saw was a demonstration of what lasers could do, and they ended the show with that song and a light show. It was incredible.

Christmas can't be coming yet. I'm not ready for our Thanksgiving and it's in only one more week! Yikes!

My brother had his lasik in Canada before it was legal in the USA. That was maybe 15-20 years ago, and he hasn't needed glasses since. He's VERY happy he had it done.

i remember the song dream weaver. I loved it too. As far as glasses I hate them too. I wear contacts, actually I wear one now. I need glasses to see far away and I am getting to the age when my close eye sight is getting worse so I can no longer read while wearing glasses. So one eye with contact sees far then other eye sees far. If I wear my glasses I have to keep taking them off. Hate that!!

Liked everything about point No 6 and what a lovely picture of the wedding.

My mama, my aunt, my friend have all had it and are beyond happy with the results. I'm not sure I'd do it if I still had to wear glasses though. Not sure. I know that I'll never be able to afford it so will just wear reading glasses for now and one day I'm sure will complain because I'll have to be wearing them all the time.
Good luck on your choice. Take care Betty and have a great and blessed day.

I LOVE the song dream weaver!!!

Your parents wedding photo is fabulous. I think it would be neat to go back in time and attend a wedding that lasted for 2 days.

Dairy Queen and DreamWeaver-- Wow, those take me back in time-- I love both.

I'm with you on hating my reading glasses but I'm not a candidate for the eye surgery. Sometimes I think it would be paradise not to always be reaching for my glasses but other times the whole idea of the surgery scares me.

Friends that have had it done are 70% love it 30% hate it and had to have the surgery a second time for "adjustments". But... NONE of them complain about not having to use readers anymore.

Keep us posted on what you decide. xo jj

Hi Betty. I've had Lasik surgery and I AM SO VERY HAPPY! I am super pleased and feel it was the best thing I ever did for myself (besides marrying my hubby!)! I went to a doctor that was very experienced and who I knew turned down people he didn't feel were ideal candidates so I felt like I could "take a chance." I've never once had a regret and can't believe I didn't do it sooner! However, that said, I was like your sister and extremely near sighted. I was told that eventually I'd need reading glasses and I use them now, but I don't care since I CAN SEE! :) :) :) Yeah! Well, I'll pray for you as you make your decision. Have a nice week!

#2 is very insightful and although I would never admit it to them, I think I have given up as well. It makes me really sad though and I sure hope that never happens with my own kids :(

If I had the bucks for Lasik, I'd be on the table in a heartbeat. I say go for it.

Now the song question.....I have so many songs that remind me, mostly of people, but sometimes just of periods in my life. Music brings back memories like nothing else to me ~

Hi Betty,

If I could send you a DQ ice cream I would - my dear friend Rose works at ours and her treat is dipping fries into the soft ice cream. hmmmm

I can't get used to having to wear glasses too. I have several relatives and friends who've had lasik with mixed results. I'm still out on this one.

I know what you mean about your folks, I have a large family, some we talk, others we choose not to. Not anything I fret about etc, just doesn't "click"

Love to visit you when I am able!
Hugs,
Barb
